Jujutsu Kaisen did a better job of preparing its audience for the impending second season than My Hero Academia did in terms of preparing viewers for a twist reveal.
Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia are two of the most well-known anime series in recent times. Both programs belong to the action-packed shonen subgenre of anime, although they do differ in some important ways.
These two series contrast in how each of their different studios handles the anime adaptation of their original manga source materials, with one series focusing on more Western-inspired superheroes and the other on the more conventional idea of spirits and curses.
Jujutsu Kaisen Prepares Fans for Season Two
Since the first episode of the series, Jujutsu Kaisen has received amazing reviews from its audience for its excellent animation, captivating soundtrack, and outstanding voice actors. With the addition of Jujutsu Kaisen's first full-length feature film, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, animation company MAPPA continued to provide and surpass audience expectations. However, Jujutsu Kaisen 0's popularity with the audience wasn't just due to MAPPA's ongoing attempts to offer high-quality material from television to movies.
MAPPA chose to animate the prequel events of the series as their first film of the franchise in order to set up audiences for forthcoming events occurring in season two of the anime series. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 gave viewers a chance to grow attached to the character of Yuta Okkotsu before his official entrance within the main timeline of the anime by producing a movie that had a connection to the series' overall plot thread.
My Hero Academia's Underwhelming Reveal
Shows like My Hero Academia seem to be trapped in the era of developing low-stakes filler plotlines that have no bearing on the larger franchise, but other studios have chosen to make movies for their series that advance the plot of the main franchise, such as Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. My Hero Academia may have benefited from an animated adaptation of their offshoot manga series My Hero Academia:Vigilantes, even though movies without a significant impact on the franchise plotlines remain entertaining.
In particular, an animated version of Shota Aizawa's tragic adventures as a new hero would have been advantageous for the brand. The My Hero Academia:Vigilantes manga reveals that Eraserhead was a member of a group of three buddies. These buddies were Oboro Shirokumo, a student at the University of Arizona who went by the superhero moniker Loud Cloud, and Hizashi Yamada, better known as the superhero Present Mic. Students Aizawa and Shirokumo encountered a villain during their hero labor study program, and the two were ill-equipped to handle the situation, which led to Aizawa witnessing the villain's demise.
Aizawa was unaware that Shirokumo's body had been rescued by All for One's doctor and transformed into Kurogiri, a mist-covered nomu from the League of Villains. To anime-only viewers, Eraserhead and Present Mic's heartbreaking emotions to seeing what had happened to their comrade seemed a touch unsatisfying because there was no buildup to this surprise.
My Hero Academia:Vigilantes is more likely to be an entire anime series like the main plotline because Studio Bones relies on producing entirely new disconnected storyline lines for the series' feature films. There is still hope that the spinoff My Hero Academia:Vigilantes can be animated in the future, even though the My Hero Academia anime may have disappointed its anime-only viewers who follow the show by its weekly episode release. If so, anime viewers will finally have the ability to fully comprehend the reasons behind the motivations of characters like Present Mic and Eraserhead in the series' current timeline.
To create further feature films for Jujutsu Kaisen that are canon-compliant with the present plot of the series, animation studio MAPPA may have its work cut out for it. Fans can only guess at this point as to whether the studio will produce a movie similar to Demon Slayer: Mugen Train to incorporate into the series or whether it will just carry on with the anime as usual.
